Jeannie has completed additional education courses at Baylor College of Dentistry in the study of orthodontics, endodontics, and insurance & billing in order to stay up to date in providing the best care for our patients.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Born and raised in the Youngstown area of Eastern Ohio, Jessi Clayton began painting while still a small child. An identical twin, she has often struggled with her own identity, seeking solace and therapy in artistic expression. At a young age she discovered early twentieth century surrealists such as Marc Chagall and Salvador Dali, allowing her to realize that her vision and imagination could be appreciated. Her deeply personal, metaphoric and psychologically expressive pieces evoke many of the sentiments of those early inspirations, as well as those of contemporary influences such as Mark Ryden and Jamali. A graduate of the Columbus College of Art and Design, Clayton recently relocated to Austin, Texas, where she works full time on private commissions and preparing a new collection for her first Texas show. Originally from Houston, Texas, Samera Owhadian, DMD graduated as student body President of The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey where she was recognized with academic and clinical honors, including the Alumni Leadership Award, the American Association of Women Dentists Distinguished Service Award, and the NJ Dental School Student Leadership Award. She also attended the University of Texas, Austin where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Development & Family Sciences.

“We are thrilled Dr. Owhadian chose to join us in our practice,” said Dr. Shane Matt, owner of Authentic Smiles, “her educational and professional track record speak for themselves, and we look forward to her contribution to our patient care,” he continued. “Her combined energy, technical expertise and professional savvy make for a great addition to the practice,” he stated.

Following graduation, Dr. Owhadian completed an advanced training General Practice Residency at Houston's Memorial Hermann Hospital via the University of Texas Dental Branch, with emphasis on hospital and sedation dentistry, and a focus on the treatment of the medically complex and special needs population. She is licensed as a general dentist by the Texas State Board of Dentistry, and an active member of the American Dental Association, Texas Dental Association, the Capital Area Dental Society, and the Academy of General Dentistry.

In the world of linear career thinking we often take comfort in what we know to be "true." Pre-med students should major in biology, of course. Pre-law students should major in political science or economics. The problem is that the truth isn't nearly as obvious as it might seem. Or even true.

While waiting to do a television interview about my book yesterday, I had an interesting conversation with a dentist, Dr. Shane Matt, who was waiting to do an interview about good and bad Halloween candy. (By the way did you know that pretzels and raisins can be worse for your teeth than candy? But I digress...) When he learned that my book was about chaos theory and the lack of connection between a college major and the subsequent career, he laughed. He told me that although he was a science major in college, he now believed that the best pre-dental major would be art. He said that the fine motor skills a student would develop through art classes - not to mention the aesthetic eye needed for cosmetic dentistry-- would serve the student well in dental school and in the profession. He also said he wished he had taken more business courses-and that most pre-professional students would benefit from at least a minor in business.
